Kati Bihu, also known as Kongali Bihu, is one of the three major Bihu festivals celebrated in Assam. Observed at the beginning of the Assamese month of Kati, it reflects the agricultural cycle when paddy crops are growing and household grain stores may be limited. In 2026, Kati Bihu falls on 18 October. Unlike the festive feasting associated with Magh Bihu, Kati Bihu is a quieter occasion marked by prayers, hope, and devotion. Families light traditional earthen lamps (saki) near Tulsi plants, granaries, and paddy fields, while farmers light lamps on bamboo poles known as Akash Bonti. These customs express hopes for healthy crops, protection, and future prosperity. Kati Bihu celebrates Assam’s agricultural heritage and the close relationship between farmers, nature, and community life.
