Born on 3 April 1904 in Darbhanga, Bihar, Goenka founded The Indian Express and became known for his strong commitment to independent journalism and freedom of the press. He also served as a member of the Constituent Assembly of India. During the Emergency of 1975–77, he and The Indian Express became associated with resistance to restrictions on the press. Goenka passed away on 5 October 1991 after a prolonged illness. The Indian Express The day provides an opportunity to remember his contribution to Indian journalism, public life and the principle of a free press.
